Hottest Bathroom Trend: The Spa Experience at Home

(ARA) – The housing bubble has finally burst, experts agree. Homeowners who once might have “moved up” to a bigger, better house as their needs and financial resources grew, are increasingly staying put, choosing instead to “improve, not move.”

But rather than simply looking at improvements as a way to raise their home’s value, many homeowners are focusing on the livability of the improvements as well. “Few home improvements offer the one-two punch of added value and comfort that you get from a bathroom remodel,” says Phil Weeks, president of Jacuzzi Whirlpool Bath. “We’re seeing a real trend among consumers to recreate a spa experience in their own bathrooms.”

The bath is the hub for the home spa experience, and installing a state-of-the-art fixture is an investment that can have high-ticket and high-comfort payoffs. And, that's only the first step. With rainfall showerheads and body sprays for the shower, steam components, radiant heating flooring and towel warmers added to the mix, homeowners can ramp up the luxury in the most-used room in the house and imitate the most posh spas in the world.

“Jacuzzi pioneered the concept of bath luxury with the original whirlpool bath,” Weeks reminds. “Homeowners embraced the indulgence, making whirlpool baths ubiquitous.”

Today, air baths – models that release bubbles into the water through a series of channels in the bath – are the latest innovation and have become a popular spa-style addition to the bathroom. While whirlpool tubs use water jets to create an invigorating massage with a churning motion, air baths fill still water with thousands of tiny air bubbles for an experience that is cleansing, but also relaxing and spiritually renewing.

To achieve ultimate pampering, homeowners are now adding bathtubs that incorporate both types of hydrotherapy effects, and even chromatherapy mood lighting. Jacuzzi’s groundbreaking Salon Spa marries whirlpool and air bath technologies in a single product that allows users to customize their experience with either effect individually or both simultaneously. “These are upgrades that would come as standard in new luxury homes,” says Weeks. “But adding them as improvements, rather than relocating to a new home, is far more realistic.”

Lighting systems are additional enhancements that can accompany the Jacuzzi home spa experience. The LED chromatherapy mood lighting system uses 256 colors to provide a visual stimulation that matches the effect of the bath. Some two-person models also offer dual jet controls – like the dual heating controls in your car – that allow each user to customize the whirlpool flows to suit personal preferences.

“You can upgrade from a soaking bath, or even a traditional bath, to a whirlpool, air bath or combination of the two for as little as $3,000,” says Weeks. “Real estate experts agree that the bathroom is one place where you can expect your returns – in the form of increased home value – to be at least double the investment. And, of course, the stress-relieving and comfort factors of a great bathroom are beyond price.”
